Austin Pendleton and Eric Joshua Davis in House Red Theatre's production of Consider the Lilies by Stuart Fail at the Barrow Group Theatre.

House Red Theatre began in an Italian Restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia. Stuart Fail and Eric Joshua Davis want to produce plays that explore themes of injustice, faith, survival of the under-represented, love and others.

House Red Theatre recently produced Consider the Lilies by Stuart at the Barrow Group Theatre. The play starred broadway star Austin Pendleton and Eric Joshua Davis. The play closed January 28th, 2017.

Below is a portion of an interview AXS had with Stuart regarding the company and play.

AXS: How did you start your own company and how did you pick the name? Was it challenging to get it off the ground and keep it afloat?

SF: I started the company in the back of an Italian Restaurant in Atlanta. The restaurant went out of business and we were not producing for several years. We started up again in Minneapolis and then moved to Los Angeles. We didn't have a theater of our own, so we floated to whichever theater we rented for a particular show.

AXS: What inspired “Consider the Lilies”?

SF: It's somewhat autobiographical, with a good amount of embellishment to make it a complete play. My close friend passed away and I started the play a year later as I was reminiscing about him.

Q: What's your favorite thing about this play?

SF: The underdogs are fighting for their survival which is the kind of play that affects me the most.

AXS: To date, how many plays have you written? Do you have a favorite?

SF: I have written four plays with several one-acts as well. I prefer this play and the “Book of James” to the others.

AXS: So far, what has been the most rewarding thing about being involved in the theatre industry?

SF: The cathartic experience I can have by acting or writing. Often, it's painful, but also rewarding.

AXS: Does House Red Theatre Company develop all work in house or do you ever work with other playwrights?

SF: We've worked with other playwrights.

AXS: Career wise, where do you hope to be in ten years?

SF: I hope to be writing, directing, acting and teaching what I love.

AXS: What advice would you give to someone who is aspiring to become a playwright?

SF: Write what moves you, matters to you, hurts you and gives you joy.
